Welcome Quantrill Historians

Welcome to the site of the Cantey/Myers Collection. This collection is the culmination of every collector's life long dream. Every collector or historian hopes that they will find something that will be a real treasure; something of significant value to the subject matter that they have spent years pursuing. For me, the Myers collection was far more than I had ever hoped to find. Like so many opportunities, this came as a complete surprise as I essentially stumbled on the collection while pursuing something else. Please continue to the biography and documentation sections above for full descriptions of what I believe to be a fascinating story of how this collection came to be accumulated and the Quantrill guerrilla who was Quantrill's archivist. I will be adding hundreds of images of original, period photographs that have not  been publicly seen since they were taken in the 1850 to 1890 period.

All of the attached images are documented in the August Myers Journal that he kept while a Quantrill guerrilla. Myers also identifies every single photograph with a number corresponding to the journal entry. This provenance alone makes these photographs unique and invaluable. Naturally there will be skeptics as in all great revelations of newly discovered treasures recently come to light. Despite this irrefutable provenance there will be individuals that will brazenly claim that these well documented images are not real. These claims are always made by individuals with the barest of education with no credentials or experience besides their self proclaimed importance. The images offered for viewing on this site are for lovers of history. Hopefully these images will correct the revisionist histories that have permeated the stories about Quantrill and his men.

Please see the Biography, Documentation, and Definition sections at the top of this page for more information.

          Do Not Publish Without Permission!

I own the originals of these images and paid money for them, I have heavily water marked them. This is my right to do so. I will not allow any unwatermarked image(s) to be used or published without my express permission and full credit to me and my collection. This aspect will not be discussed or argued with anyone. It has always been the standard of ethics in America that all honorable people wanting to publish someone else's property ask permission and fully credit the owner. This standard applies here, regardless of any stated copyright laws. Those who wish to attempt to abuse this standard of ethics by attempting to use something for nothing need not apply here.

                       Tintype Process

PLEASE NOTE: Contrary to the uninformed few, ALL early tintypes were REVERSE NEGATIVE as that was the PROCESS. Much later (in terms of years) a few cameras corrected this reverse negative process by adding mirrors. However, these were few and far between. ALL of the early tintypes in this collection are REVERSE NEGATIVES.

I am proud to be a founding member of this
site and on its board of directors.
"Quantrill and his men have been unjustly slandered by the people of the North, a people who, even to this day, know nothing of them, except what they have read in irresponsible books and newspapers."

"It is not enough that their valor is recognized. It is not enough that their honesty be confessed. We ask of our Northern brother, we ask of all mankind and all womankind a recognition of their patriotism, their love of country, and of liberty...We cannot remain silent, so long as any aspersion is cast by the pen of the historian, or the tongue of the orator upon their patriotic motives, or the loftiness of their purposes throughout that mighty struggle. We make no half-hearted apologies for their acts. It is justice for which we plead, not charity."
